Quick answer: Safari downloads go to the Downloads folder in the Files app (iCloud Drive by default). Rename files as they arrive, move keepers into proper folders, delete the rest monthly, and change the download location in Safari's settings if you prefer On My iPhone.
Written for iOS 18 and iOS 26. Menu names can differ slightly on older versions.
Every PDF you open from a website lands in Downloads and stays there. A few minutes of setup stops it becoming a pile.
Find your Downloads folder
Files›Browse›iCloud Drive›Downloads
Safari sets the location. To change it, open Safari's settings and tap Downloads, then choose iCloud Drive, On My iPhone or another folder.
Rename files as they arrive
"document(3).pdf" tells you nothing. Touch and hold the file and choose Rename: "Lease agreement – Oct 2026.pdf". It takes seconds and makes search work later.
Move keepers out of Downloads
Downloads should be a temporary inbox. Touch and hold a file, choose Move, and put it in a folder like Documents or Travel. A simple folder setup for Files.
Do a monthly sweep
- Open Downloads and sort by date.
- Delete anything you opened once and won't need again.
- Rename and move whatever is left.
Clear the download list in Safari
In Safari's settings, under Downloads, Remove Download List Items can clear the list automatically after a day or after a successful download. That tidies Safari's list without deleting files.
Not everything belongs in Files
Images you download often fit better in Photos, and tickets in Wallet. For PDFs and files you'll need alongside related links and notes, share them to Snugit so one search finds them all.
