Quick answer: To save every photo from a conversation at once, open the chat in Messages, tap the person's name at the top, scroll to Photos, tap See All, then tap Select, choose the photos and tap Save. For a group of photos sent together, tap the Save button next to the stack.
Written for iOS 18 and iOS 26. Menu names can differ slightly on older versions.
Photos people send you in Messages don't go into your photo library on their own. They stay inside the conversation, and if that chat is deleted, or you switch phones without a backup, they can be gone. Here are four ways to save them, from a single picture to a whole year of family group chat photos.
Method 1: Save a single photo
- Open the conversation and tap the photo to open it full screen.
- Tap the Share button (a square with an arrow).
- Tap Save Image (or Save Video for a video).
A faster way: touch and hold the photo in the chat and tap Save in the menu that appears. The photo is added to your library with the date it was saved.
Method 2: Save a whole stack with one tap
When someone sends several photos together, Messages groups them into a stack. Next to the stack there's a Save button (a box with a downward arrow). Tap it and every photo in the stack is saved at once.
To pick only some of them, tap the stack to fan it out, tap a photo, and save it on its own.
Method 3: Save every photo in a conversation at once
This is the method most people are looking for. Messages keeps a list of every photo shared in a conversation.
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- Tap the person's name or the group name at the top.
- Scroll down to Photos and tap See All.
- Tap Select, then tap each photo you want, or drag your finger across rows to select many quickly.
- Tap Save.
Messages›Conversation›Name at top›Photos›See All›Select›Save
The same screen also lists Links and Documents shared in that chat, which is handy for finding a PDF someone sent months ago.
Method 4: Use "Shared with You" in Photos
Photos can show pictures people sent you in Messages in a Shared with You section, even before you save them. Open Photos, find Shared with You in your collections, tap a photo, and tap Save to Library.
If you don't see it, check that Shared with You is turned on in the Messages settings, and that Photos is allowed under it. You can also turn it off for specific conversations if you don't want everything from a busy group chat showing up.
Which method should you use?
| You want to save… | Use |
|---|---|
| One photo | Touch and hold → Save |
| A batch sent together | The Save button next to the stack |
| Everything from one person or group | Name at top → Photos → See All → Select |
| Photos you haven't seen yet, across chats | Shared with You in Photos |
| Years of photos, onto a computer | A full backup plus a backup-browsing app |
Saving photos from WhatsApp and other apps
Other chat apps work differently. In WhatsApp, you can save photos one by one from the chat, or turn on Save to Photos in its chat settings so new photos save automatically. Most chat apps have a similar option in their settings.
Free up space after saving
Once photos are safely in your library, the copies inside Messages still take up storage. To clear them:
Settings›General›iPhone Storage›Messages›Review Large Attachments
Swipe left on attachments to delete them, or tap Edit to remove many at once. You can also set Keep Messages to 30 days or a year in Messages settings, so old attachments clear themselves. More ways to free up storage.
Keep the photos that matter findable
Saved photos land in your library among thousands of others. For the ones you'll need again, like a photo of a document, a whiteboard or a product label someone texted you, add them to an album right away, or share them to Snugit with a name you can search. How to save links, codes and addresses from texts.
Troubleshooting
- No Save option: the photo may still be loading. Wait for it to download fully, especially on a slow connection.
- Photos look blurry: photos sent as SMS/MMS (green bubbles) are compressed by the carrier. Ask the sender to share an iCloud link or use AirDrop for full quality.
- Saved photo appears on an old date: Photos sorts by the date the picture was taken, not when you saved it. Search for it, or check Recents.
- Old photos are missing from the chat: if Keep Messages is set to 30 days or a year, older attachments have already been deleted.
Save photos from Messages on a Mac
If you use Messages on a Mac, open the conversation, click the info button or the person's name, and go to Photos. Select the pictures and drag them into the Photos app or a folder on your desktop. With iCloud Photos on, anything you add on the Mac also appears on your iPhone.
Common questions
Do photos in Messages save automatically?
No. Photos stay inside the conversation until you save them. They are included in an iCloud or computer backup of your iPhone, but they only appear in your photo library once you save them.
How do I save all photos from a group chat?
Open the group chat, tap the group name or photos at the top, scroll to Photos and tap See All. Tap Select, choose everything you want, and tap Save. It works the same as a one-to-one conversation.
Will deleting the conversation delete the photos?
It deletes the copies inside Messages. Photos you already saved to your library stay there. Save anything you want to keep before deleting a chat.
How do I save a video from a text message?
Touch and hold the video and tap Save, or open it and tap Share, then Save Video. Videos also appear in the conversation's Photos list, where you can select and save several at once.
Can I save photos from Messages to Files instead?
Yes. Open the photo, tap Share, and choose Save to Files. This keeps a file you can rename and move, which suits photos of documents.
Download Snugit and keep the photos people send you findable by name.
