Quick answer: For most people, Apple Photos is enough: it has a Screenshots album and searches the text inside images. Google Photos adds cloud backup and strong search. If your screenshots are really information (codes, receipts, addresses), save them in Snugit or Notes with a name, outside your camera roll.
Updated October 2026. Disclosure: we make Snugit.
Search the App Store for "screenshot organizer" and you'll find dozens of apps. Most people don't need one. Here's how the main options compare, including the free ones already on your iPhone.
The comparison
| App | Best for | Searches text in screenshots | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Photos | Keeping screenshots with your photos | Yes | Free, built in |
| Google Photos | Backup and search across devices | Yes | Free storage tier, paid plans |
| Apple Notes | Screenshots that belong with your writing | Yes | Free, built in |
| Files | Screenshots as documents in folders | Partly | Free, built in |
| Snugit | Screenshots you'll need again, findable by name | By the name you give it | Free for 10 items, Pro subscription |
Apple Photos: start here
Photos already separates screenshots into their own album (Collections → Media Types → Screenshots), reads the text inside them, and lets you sort keepers into albums. Free and private. Step-by-step: organizing screenshots in Photos.
Google Photos: if you want backup and Android
Google Photos backs up your library to Google's cloud, works on Android and the web, and has strong search, including text in images. The tradeoff is that your photos live on Google's servers and use your Google storage.
Apple Notes and Files: screenshots as information
A screenshot of meeting slides belongs in a note next to what you wrote. A screenshot of a document belongs in Files as a PDF. Moving these out of Photos keeps your camera roll for actual photos.
Snugit: for screenshots you'll need again
Most screenshots exist to keep a piece of information: a parking spot, a code, a receipt, a recipe. Share them to Snugit with a name, and they stay out of your camera roll, sit next to related links and notes, and come back when you type a word. You can lock sensitive ones with Face ID.
What about dedicated cleaner apps?
Plenty of App Store apps promise to clean up screenshots automatically. Many need full access to your photo library and push a subscription. Before installing one, try Photos' built-in Screenshots and Duplicates albums. How to delete all screenshots at once.
