Quick answer: Start with the built-in Screenshots album (Photos → Collections → Media Types on iOS 18 and later). Delete the ones you no longer need, move keepers into named albums, and turn screenshots of text into searchable notes by copying the words out with Live Text.
Written for iOS 18 and iOS 26. Menu names can differ slightly on older versions.
Most people have hundreds of screenshots: codes, receipts, recipes, maps, memes. They're fast to take and slow to find, because they sit in the same grid as every photo you've ever taken. Here's how to organize the pile you have, and how to stop it growing back.
Step 1: Find all your screenshots in one place
iPhone already separates screenshots from your other photos.
Photos›Collections›Media Types›Screenshots
On iOS 18 and later, Collections is the section below your library (a separate tab on iOS 26). On iOS 17 and earlier, tap Albums and scroll to Media Types.
Step 2: Delete the ones you don't need
In the Screenshots album, tap Select, then drag your finger across rows to select many at once. Old verification codes, delivery updates and memes can go. For a full clear-out, here's how to delete all your screenshots at once without losing the ones that matter.
Step 3: Sort keepers into albums
- Tap Select and choose the screenshots that belong together.
- Tap the More button (three dots), then Add to Album.
- Pick an album or create a new one, like "Receipts" or "Recipes".
Keep it to a handful of albums. Ten broad ones you use beat forty precise ones you forget.
Step 4: Use search instead of scrolling
Photos reads the text inside your screenshots and recognizes what's in them. Search for a word that was on screen, like a store name or "boarding", and matching screenshots appear. Full guide to searching photos by text.
Step 5: Turn text screenshots into notes
A screenshot of a Wi-Fi password or an address is really just text. Open it, touch and hold the words, tap Copy, paste them into a note, then delete the screenshot. Your camera roll shrinks and the information becomes searchable. How to copy text from a photo.
Stop screenshots piling up again
- Copy and Delete: after taking a screenshot, tap the preview, tap Done, and choose Copy and Delete. You can paste it straight into a message or note and it never lands in Photos.
- Save to Files from the same menu for documents you want as files, not photos.
- Save it somewhere searchable: share the screenshot to Snugit with a name you'll remember, outside your camera roll.
Where do screenshots go on iPhone?
Every screenshot is saved to your photo library, shows up in the Screenshots album automatically, and syncs to your other devices if iCloud Photos is on. Full-page screenshots of websites are the exception: you save those as PDFs to the Files app. If one seems to have vanished, check these places first.
Troubleshooting
- No Screenshots album: it appears once you've taken at least one screenshot.
- A screenshot is missing from the album: it may be in the Hidden album or Recently Deleted, both under Utilities.
A 10-minute monthly routine
- Open the Screenshots album and scroll to last month.
- Delete anything that has expired: one-time codes, delivery updates, memes you already sent.
- Move keepers into your handful of albums.
- For screenshots that are really text, copy the words into a note and delete the image.
- Empty Recently Deleted so the space is freed straight away.
Ten minutes once a month keeps the pile from ever reaching the thousands again.
Screenshots on your iPad and Mac
With iCloud Photos on, screenshots from your iPad land in the same library and Screenshots album as your iPhone ones. On a Mac, screenshots save to the Desktop by default, not to Photos. To change that, open the Screenshot app (Shift-Command-5), click Options, and choose a folder under Save to.
Common questions
Can I automatically sort screenshots into folders?
Photos does it for one folder: every screenshot goes into the Screenshots album automatically. Beyond that there is no automatic sorting by topic. A Shortcut can find screenshots and add them to an album, but most people get further with search and a few manual albums.
Do albums create copies of my screenshots?
No. Albums only point to photos in your library, so adding a screenshot to three albums does not use more storage. Deleting it from the library removes it from every album.
How do I hide a screenshot without deleting it?
Open it, tap the More button (three dots), and choose Hide. It moves to the Hidden album under Utilities, which is locked with Face ID, and disappears from your library, widgets and memories.
Why do my screenshots take up so much space?
Each screenshot is a full-resolution image, often 0.5 to 3 MB, and long screen recordings are far bigger. Thousands of them add up to gigabytes. Clearing the Screenshots album and emptying Recently Deleted usually frees space quickly.
Should I keep screenshots in Photos or Files?
Keep pictures in Photos. Save documents (tickets, statements, full-page captures) to Files as PDFs, and save information you will need again, like codes and addresses, as searchable text in a notes or saving app.
Get Snugit to keep the screenshots you need out of your camera roll and findable by name.
