How to Keep Track of Gift Ideas Without Forgetting Them

Quick answer: Save each idea the moment you think of it, in one place, with the person's name in it ("Mom: that blue scarf"). Save the product link, not just a description, and set a reminder before birthdays and holidays so the list gets used.

The perfect gift idea shows up in March, in a passing comment. In December you need it and it's gone. Here's a simple system.

Save the idea the moment it happens

The window is seconds long. Whatever you use has to be faster than "I'll remember". Type the person's name and the idea, or share the product page straight from the app you're in.

Use the person's name in every entry

"Sam: noise-cancelling headphones" is findable. A bare product link is not. One list with names beats one list per person that you never open.

Save the product page, not a description

A link keeps the exact model, color and store. From Safari or a shopping app, tap Share and save the link with the person's name. For something seen in a shop, take a photo of the label or price tag.

Set a reminder before the date

In Reminders, add "Check gift ideas for Sam" two weeks before their birthday. The list is only useful if you look at it in time to order.

Where to keep the list
