How to Organize Safari Bookmarks on iPhone

Quick answer: In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button, then Edit. Tap New Folder to create folders, tap a bookmark to move or rename it, and drag to reorder. Keep a few folders, put daily sites in Favorites, and use the search field instead of browsing.

Written for iOS 18 and iOS 26. Menu names can differ slightly on older versions.

A flat list of bookmarks works for the first twenty. After that you're scrolling and guessing. Here's how to organize them, and keep them that way.

Create folders

  1. Tap the Bookmarks button (the open book).
  2. Tap Edit at the bottom.
  3. Tap New Folder, name it, and tap Done.

Move, rename and reorder bookmarks

In Edit mode, tap a bookmark to change its name, address or folder. Drag the handles to reorder. Swipe left on a bookmark to delete it.

Use Favorites for daily sites

Bookmarks in the Favorites folder appear every time you open a new tab. Keep it to the six to eight sites you use most.

Save to the right folder from the start

When adding a bookmark (Share → Add Bookmark), choose the folder right then. "I'll organize later" is how the flat list happened.

Search instead of browsing

In the Bookmarks view, pull down to reveal the search field. Typing part of a site's name is faster than opening folders, even well-organized ones.

Sync with iCloud

Turn on Safari in iCloud settings (Settings → your name → iCloud) so the same bookmarks appear on your iPhone, iPad and Mac, instead of three half-organized lists.

Bookmarks or Reading List?

Many messy bookmark lists are really articles to read once. Those belong in Reading List. Which to use when.

Links from outside Safari

Bookmarks only work for pages in Safari. For links from Instagram, TikTok or messages, save them somewhere you can search. Snugit takes links from any app's share sheet.

Download Snugit for the links your bookmarks can't hold.
